Playstation 2

Well here's the promised tutorial

  step 1

Step 1

Completely switch off you PS2 console (with the switch on the back) remove all cabling, controllers, USB devices, memory cards and don't forget to remove the CD from the PS2. For easier handling remove the 5 1/4 slot at the back off the machine. please read the sticker on the back.

  step 2

Step 2

Now put the PS2 upside down on a soft cloth. To prevent damage on the cool looking PS2 logo. In the bottom you'll see 10 little squares, 4 of these squares are the rubber stands where your PS2 stands on in horizontal position.

  step 3

Step 3

These are easy to remove using your nail, a blunt knife or a screwdriver. Remove al 10 squares (be very carefull not to damage the squares) and put them away, make sure you don't loose them because it will damage the cool look of your PS2.

  step 4

Step 4

Remove all 10 square screw covers to reveal 10 philips-head screws. I removed all the screws. (Remember which screw goes where because there are three diffirent screws used in this part.) Which enabled me to carefully take the top and bottom cover off.

  step 5

Step 5

After I removed both covers. BE CAREFULL THE TOP COVER WITH THE PS2 LOGO HAS A LITTLE FLAT CABLE FOR THE ON/OFF & RESET SWITCH. I turned the PS2 around (normal horizontal position) This showed that the PS2 is divided in two parts; the DVD drive and the electronics. The DVD drive seemed to be covered by a plastic protection hull.

  step 6

Step 6

A quick search uncovered a small copper colored philipshead in the left front of the dvd drive holding the piece of plastic in place. Carefully remove the screw and nou you can remove the coverplate finally showing what we are looking for the laserunit.

  step 7

Step 7

Here you see a total shot of the open PS2, the middle outer right side showing a litle part of the flatcable. And you see the laserlens in the DVD drive, this is the part we want to clean.

  step 8

Step 8

Just above the spindle of the DVD player you'll find a little glasslike lens this is the laserlens I cleaned it carefully using a cottonswab and lenscleanerfluid (alcohol). After you have finished this follow the steps mentioned above to reassemble the PS2. I got a message from a guy called "Cypress Hill" he tried to clean his PS2 but when reassembling the machine the topcover wouldn't fit I suggested that it would be a problem with the DVD coverplate, I didn't get a reaction yet but I'll update this asap.
